Position Summary:

Working as a part of a multi-disciplinary team, nurses at the Behavioral Health Crisis Center treat and educate clients in crisis about various behavioral health and medical conditions. They also provide advice and emotional support to clients and their family members/supporters. 

Nurses assist in assessing, planning treatments, educating and supporting, administering and monitoring medication, and providing treatment for behavioral health and comorbid physical health conditions while clients are on our unit. In addition, they work with the discharge team to ensure appropriate after-care services and medication are accessible upon discharge.

Duties and Responsibilities: The RN is responsible for establishing a Nursing plan of care or contributing to an existing plan for clients. Patient care plans may include administering medication, including carefully checking the dosages and avoiding interactions, administering therapies and treatments, observing the client and recording those observations, and consulting with physicians and other health care clinicians. 

The RN/LPN records clients’ medical histories, behavioral health histories, and symptoms. As the RN, the candidate may provide direction to licensed practical nurses or other clinical support staff, including nursing aids regarding client care. In addition, the candidate will perform the following duties:

  • Provide the client with treatment and education about behavioral health conditions and medical conditions.
  • Interview clients and/or family members using proper techniques appropriate for the client’s level of functioning to obtain necessary information regarding medical, social, and/or emotional background. 
  • Complete initial and ongoing Nursing assessments, treatment/discharge plans, and Orders for Services that reflect treatment goals, nursing interventions, client response, and standards of the Agency and the State.
  • Assist in performing diagnostic tests, operating medication machinery or equipment, analyzing results, and consulting with prescriber regarding treatment interventions.
  • Administer the client’s medications, including injectable medication, as indicated in the treatment plans.
  • Monitor medication response, side effects, and adverse effects of medication
  • Order lab work per protocol, perform lab draws, use CLIA-waived (Clinical Improvement Amendments) lab equipment for in-house lab work, and obtain lab results from commercial labs. Assist with the referral process as needed or indicated for variations in metabolic indices.
  • Record clients’ medical histories, symptoms, and any treatment plans into the client record.
  • Staff complex cases with prescribers for direction; consult with other staff members related to client care.
  • Educate the client on individualized information pertaining to diagnosis, medication usage, side effects, treatment adherence, and other topics.
  • Provide essential case management and linkages by giving referrals for changing levels of care or to community partners.
  • Complete and/or sign medication logs, progress notes, entries into medication profile, and medication and laboratory orders (within Agency established timeframes).
  • Attend monthly nursing staff meetings or program meetings.
  • Participate in the shift change, providing information regarding client care and response.
  • Attend daily treatment team meetings.
  • Provide appropriate information and/or input at shift change and in meetings pertaining to client care.
  • Follow Prescriber’s Orders, Nursing Care Plans, and Treatment plans regarding services to clients and frequency of services.
  • Assist clients with daily living activities as needed.
  • Provide social and psychological support to clients through client engagement, listening, and discussing problems and progress as necessary
  • Utilize skills of safety care to de-escalate situations and avoid the need for restraint.
  • Participate with the team to restrain clients when necessary and according to procedure.
  • Contact other health care professionals within or outside the organization to obtain consumer background information in accordance with established guidelines.
  • Collaborate with service providers in addressing concerns and treatment planning changes or additions.
  • Comply with regulations on confidentiality of client information as specified by the established policy.
  • Comply with all DBHDD regulations and Advantage Policies and Procedures regarding client care and any tasks/responsibilities in the operation of a BHCC.
  • Complete other duties as assigned by Nurse Manager, Charge Nurse, or other leadership.
  • Administer, read/review, and document results of tests and labs, including but not limited to PPDs, RPRs, COVID-19 testing, and others as ordered by the prescriber.
  • Assist with observations – line of sight or one-to-one observation and during seclusion or restraint – as needed.
  • Ensure medication dispensing cart contains all necessary medications and supplies and order any that are needed, especially for overnights and weekends.
  • Present on the unit, ready to begin work at the scheduled time.

Minimum Qualifications:

The candidate must have an active RN license in the state of Georgia.

Preferred Qualifications:

Bachelor’s degree of Nursing from an accredited educational institution, plus at least 5 years of post-graduate clinical experience in multidisciplinary mental health setting.
